Remote learning versus traditional learning: Attitudes of university students
[Дистанционное обучение и традиционное обучение: отношение студентов университета]

RUDN journal of philosophy: The expulsion of reason. To the 100th anniversary of the Philosophical steamer, 2022, vol. 26, no. 1, p. 194-206

The years 2020 and 2021 brought new challenges to teaching and learning in the institutions of tertiary education due to the global COVID-19 Pandemic. They have been the devastating years for many teachers. Innumerable difficulties in professional and personal life increased the stress — striving to survive with the least losses. Temporary measures for remote teaching/learning in spring of 2020 extended until summer of 2021 worldwide and seem unlikely to stop in the nearest future. New challenge of novel online activities made teachers reconsider their teaching philosophy due to an overall lack of students’ engagement in spite of the usual and familiar learning procedures. The current crisis outlines the following framework to teaching philosophy: capability, reliability, inability, suitability, ingenuity, and sustainability. This article aims at researching University students’ attitudes to remote and traditional learning of English for Specific Purposes. A specially designed survey was administered to 180 full-time students (9 groups, 20 students in each group). Their responses were statistically processed by a means of the SPSS software to compute the Means and Standard Variations and compare the estimates of the between-group and within-group variances. Statistical processing of multiple samples reveals whether observed differences in responses occur at random, i. e. are due to chance, or they are significant, real and meaningful. The scientific analysis of computation data might allow drawing conclusions about students’ preferences: which mode of learning — remote or traditional — is beneficial and how much is each of them supportive.

Based on insights from interviews with communication field experts, the paper sheds light on the efforts of Lithuanian society to confront the problem of fake news in digital media environment. Lithuania is also an interesting case study for fake news due to its status as a former Soviet state now in the EU. Our research indicates that not all media users are prepared and/or have the necessary competencies to combat fake news, so that citizen engagement might actually negatively influence the quality of the counteraction process. Indeed, proactive citizens’ organizations and NGOs could be an important catalyst fostering collaboration between stakeholders. The responsibility of governments could be to create the structures, methodologies and supporting educational activities to involve the stakeholders in collaborating activities combating disinformation.

Studies of real complex physical and engineering problems represented by multiscale and multiphysics computer simulations have an increasing demand for computing power. The demand is driven by the increasing scales and complexity of the scientific problems investigated or the time constraints. Ultrascale computing systems could offer the computing power required to solve these problems. Future ultrascale systems will be large-scale complex computing systems combining technologies from high performance computing, distributed systems, big data, and cloud computing. The challenge of developing and programming complex algorithms that can efficiently perform on such systems is twofold. Firstly, the complex computer simulations have to be either developed from scratch, or redesigned in order to yield high performance, while retaining correct functional behaviour. Secondly, ultrascale computing systems impose a number of non-functional cross-cutting concerns, such as fault tolerance or energy consumption, which can significantly impact the deployment of applications on large complex computing systems. This article discusses the state-of-the-art of programming for current and future large-scale computing systems with an emphasis on complex applications. We derive a number of requirements regarding programming and execution support by studying several computationally demanding applications that the authors are currently developing and discuss their potential and necessary upgrades for ultrascale execution on ultrascale facilities.

Now ultrasound is widely applied in various fields: metallurgy, chemical and the food-processing industry, medicine and equipment manufacture. Also the ultrasound plays an essential role in water purification constructions used for cleaning harmful water impurities. The underground waters used for maintenance of the population by potable water, contain a considerable quantity of nonsoluble suspensions, in particular, iron. Using ultrasonic oscillations promotes a prompt oxidizing, integration and deposition of particles of iron and other harmful impurities. Basing on the solution for changing the deposition of the diffusion particles flux through the acoustic and hydrodynamic boundary layers intensification of deposition of particles sedimentation for an acoustic field is received.
