    Multi-alignment templates induction
    [Automatinio vertimo taisyklių indukcija]
    research article[2008][S1][N009][20];
    Informatica, 2008, vol. 19, no. 4, p. 535-554

    This paper examins approaches for translation between English and morphology-rich languages. Experiment with English–Russian and English–Lithuanian revels that “pure” statistical approaches on 10 million word corpus gives unsatisfactory translation. Then, severalWeb-available linguistic resources are suggested for translation. Syntax parsers, bilingual and semantic dictionaries, bilingual parallel corpus and monolingualWeb-based corpus are integrated in one comprehensive statistical model. Multi-abstraction language representation is used for statistical induction of syntactic and semantic transformation rules called multi-alignment templates. The decodingmodel is described using the feature functions, a log-linear modeling approach and A* search algorithm. An evaluation of this approach is performed on the English–Lithuanian language pair. Presented experimental results demonstrates that the multi-abstraction approach and hybridization of learning methods can improve quality of translation.

    The method for calculating the specific conductivity tensor of an anisotropically conductive medium, proposed in this paper, distinguishes itself by the simplicity of physical measurements: it suffices to make an equally thick rectangle-shaped sample with four electrodes fixed on its sides and to take various measurements of current intensity and differences of potentials. The necessary mathematical calculations can be promptly performed, even without using a complex computing technique. The accuracy of the results obtained depends on the dimensions of the sample and on the ratios of the conductivity tensor components.

    Parallel numerical algorithms for 3D parabolic problem with nonlocal boundary condition
    [Trimačio parabolinio uždavinio su nelokaliąja kraštine sąlyga lygiagretieji skaitiniai sprendimo algoritmai]
    research article[2006][S1][N001,T007][16]
    Informatica, 2006, vol. 17, no. 3, p. 309-324

    Three parallel algorithms for solving the 3D problem with nonlocal boundary condition are considered. The forward and backward Euler finite-difference schemes, and LOD scheme are typical representatives of three general classes of parallel algorithms used to solve multidimensional parabolic initial-boundary value problems. All algorithms are modified to take into account additional nonlocal boundary condition. The algorithms are implemented using the parallel array object tool ParSol, then a parallel algorithm follows semi-automatically from the serial one. Results of computational experiments are presented and the accuracy and efficiency of the presented parallel algorithms are tested.

    Parallel DEM software for simulation of granular media

    research article[2006][S1][N009,T009][18]; ; ; ;
    Informatica, 2006, vol. 17, no. 2, p. 207-224

    The paper describes the development and performance of parallel algorithms for the discrete element method (DEM) software. Spatial domain decomposition strategy and message passing inter-processor communication have been implemented in the DEMMAT code for simulation of visco-elastic frictional granular media. The novel algorithm combining link-cells for contact detection, the static domain decomposition for parallelization and MPI data transfer for processors exchanging particles has been developed for distributed memory PC clusters. The parallel software DEMMAT_PAR has been applied to model compacting of spherical particles in the rectangular box. Two benchmark problems with different numbers of particles have been solved in order to measure parallel efficiency of the code. The inter-processor communication has been examined in order to improve domain decomposition topology and to achieve better load balancing. The speed-up equal to 11 has been obtained on 16 processors. The parallel performance study has been performed on the PC cluster VILKAS of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Lithuania.

    Discrimination of homographs distorted by a lengthy impulsive noise
    [Homografų, sugadintų ilgu impulsiniu triukšmu, skyra]
    research article[2006][S1][N009,T007][8];
    Informatica, 2006, vol. 17, no. 2, p. 297-304

    The paper addresses the problem of discrimination of homographs when a lengthy segment of an uttered word is missing. The considered discrimination procedure is done by recognizer that operates on cepstrum coefficients extracted from the speech signal. For restoration of the missing speech segment rather than use of the known speech signal, it has been proposed to calculate speech signal characteristics: the period of fundamental frequency and intensity. By experimentation it has been shown that the polynomial approximation of speech signal characteristics improves homograph discrimination results. An extra computational burden associated with the proposed method is not high because it involves recalculation of the already extracted Fourier coefficients.

    Evaluation of ranking accuracy in multi-criteria decisions
    [Alternatyvų prioritetų nustatymo daugiakriteriniuose uždaviniuose tikslumas]
    research article[2006][S1][N009,T007,T010][18]; ;
    Informatica, 2006, vol. 17, no. 4, p. 601-618

    The paper analyses the problem of ranking accuracy in multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The methodology for measuring the accuracy of determining the relative significance of alternatives as a function of the criteria values is developed. An algorithm of the Technique for the Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) that applies criteria values' transformation through a normalization of vectors and the linear transformation is considered. A computational experiment is presented, to compare the results of a multiple criteria analysis and the ranking accuracy in a particular situation.

    On the identification of Wiener systems having saturation-like functions with positive slopes
    [Apie Vinerio sistemų, turinčių dalimis tiesišką netiesiškumą su teigiamais nuožulnumais, identifikavimą]
    research article[2005][S1][N009,T007][14]
    Informatica, 2005, vol. 16, no. 1, p. 131-144

    The aim of the given paper is the development of an approach for parametric identification of Wiener systems with piecewise linear nonlinearities, i.e., when the linear part with unknown parameters is followed by a saturation-like function with unknown slopes. It is shown here that by a simple data reordering and by a following data partition the problem of identification of a nonlinear Wiener system could be reduced to a linear parametric estimation problem. Afterwards, estimates of the unknown parameters of linear regression models are calculated by processing respective particles of input-output data. A technique based on ordinary least squares (LS) is proposed here for the estimation of parameters of linear and nonlinear parts of the Wiener system, including the unknown threshold of piecewise nonlinearity, too. The results of numerical simulation and identification obtained by processing observations of input-output signals of a discrete-time Wiener system with a piecewise nonlinearity by computer are given.

    The target of this research in the queueing theory is to prove the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) under the conditions of heavy traffic in multiphase queueing systems. In this paper, the LIL for global maxima is proved in the phases of a queueing system studied for an important probability characteristic of the system (total waiting time of a customer and waiting time of a customer).
