The purpose of this work - understand the concept of development level and sustainable development (SD), highlight the main SD indicators for Eastern Europe region and estimate Lithuanian development level in this context. The work is organized into three parts. Theoretical part focuses on history of economical mind in order to review theoretical foundation and stress the importance to adopt different theories in rapidly changing world. SD is the concept that highlights the ability to develop without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. At present the SD is the central concept in many international and national economical units.Part Two concentrates on United Nations and Europe Union SD policies. Part Three analyses SD indicators from Eurostat database. The hypothesis - all SD development indicators have to change in positive direction for ensuring sustainable process. At the same time there are special indicators having the strongest impact on the development level for every region. The tested region is the East Europe. Correlation and regression methods are used in the analysis. Four SD variables - Labour productivity per person employed, Total employment rate, Household expenditure per inhabitant, Average exit age from the labour market are the most important in the Eastern Europe. Therefore importance of labour market in SD can be clearly seen and should be monitored more closely. Results of the model are close to factual situation therefore it should be useful to go down in details for further analyses and formulation of recommendations from economical point of view.
