Evaluation of Distribution of Metals of Thlaspi caerulescens Grown in Sewage Sludge: Acropetal vs Basipetal
The master study consists of 104 pages, 3 sections, 9 tables, 50 figures, 189 references was reviewed. The aim of this study is to evaluate Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd acropetal and basipetal metal translocation in Thlaspi caerulescens body as well as metal concentration changes during the vegetation period and metal removal effectiveness. The object of the study is biological uptake of metals. During the experiment plants were grown in a soil mix prepared in a proportion: 2 parts of soil and 1 part of sewage sludge. Plants were harvested 3 times: in July, August and September. Heavy metal determination was dome using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Analysis of the results showed that control plants performed better in shoot height and total dry weight than treated plants. Treated plants had acropetal metal translocation, this shows that higher concentrations of metals were found in plant roots. During the second vegetation month T. caerulescens accumulated highest amounts of all four investigated metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd) comparing with the rest vegetation period. This shows that during the second vegetation month can be observed the most effective metal removal from polluted soil. Modelling and evaluation of phytoremediation effectiveness was done with second harvesting plants data. Modelling results show that T. caerulescens is highly effective to clean soil polluted with Cd and Zn. To remediate all available Cd would be possible with 5 annual croppings, Zn with 13 croppings. However, to remediate Cu and Pb using T. caerulescens would be economically unviable in a realistic time span. The reason for that could be too high soil pH, low metal solubility/availability and plants sensitivity to Cu.
