In recent years changes in district heating have been seen. The traditional heat producers have been replaced by new ones and traditional fuel types have been changed to greener, more sustainable fuel. As the heating sector is changing, various types of energy supply and energy production related contingencies appears. There is a need for the managers of cities to analyze the current situation and provide further heat generation sector development, which has to be consistent with the European Union's objectives in the energy production sector. The study contains engineering analysis of Vilnius city heat production alternatives with regard to the future prospects of modernization. The simulation of the alternatives has been done using program ”EnergyPlan”. The model has been calibrated according to the actual data (year 2016) of Vilnius district heating sector. The alternatives have been assessed by energy and environmental aspects. In the future this type of analysis could help to make the right decisions in order to reduce the cost of thermal energy and primary energy consumption by increasing energy efficiency.
