Research on the energy and ecological indicators of a compression ignition engine fueled by Diesel-Biodiesel (RME-based) - isopropanol fuel blends
This thesis presents research results of energy and ecological indicators at different engine loads (BMEP) and Start of Injection (SOI) of a CI Engine fueled by blends prepared at D50RME45P5, D50RME40P10 and D50RME30P20 proportions and are compared with that of 100% Diesel. The conventional diesel fuel and the mixture with 10% alcohol tend to have nearly same thermal efficiency. Further examining the energy and ecological Indicators, combustion parameters are analyzed at SOI 6 CAD BTDC using AVL BOOST software. Increasing alcohol content in the fuel blend contributed to the reduction in cetane number, which prolonged the ignition delay phase and increased heat release intensity during the premixed combustion phase. Higher combustion temperatures and oxygen content in the fuel increased NOx emissions. Lower C/H ratios and higher O2 levels influenced by RME and isopropanol reduced smoke and CO2 emissions. As a next step in the research, properties of the fuel mixture D50RME20P30 has been calculated. Projected values of the experimental data (that is derived from the engine testing) and analytical data are calculated using the highest possible coefficient of determination (R-squared value) and are run on AVL BOOST software to get the simulation results. Diesel values are similarly determined to check the efficiency of the results and compare them with that of the previous results. By using the same formula and methodology, properties of different fuel mixtures can be obtained at different conditions by using the statistics of previously tested fuel mixtures.
