Low Carbon District Heating System by Low Temperature Design
The options for improvement of the district heating system efficiency are a topic that has recently been actively debated among scientists and district heating companies. This issue has become even more topical due to the increased energy efficiency of buildings, which reduces the total heat consumption. This tendency forces the district heating companies to look for new operation models in order to reduce the operating costs and raise competitiveness of the district heating systems, if compared to other heat sources.Various possible scenarios for the district heating system of a to-be-built real estate district are compared in this study. Different temperature regimes, building energy performances and fuel types are evaluated in order to determine the most feasible solution. The choice of lower temperature regime allows reducing heat losses in the heat network and primary energy consumption, but increases power consumption, as more power is then required to overcome the pressure losses. The results show that in the case of energy efficient buildings the decrease in the total heat consumption significantly increases specific costs of district heating system. The level of electricity prices and fuel costs also significantly affect the model to be selected for the development of the district heating system. The results of technological, economical and environmental indicators have been evaluated by using multi-criteria analyses method. Two different multi-criteria analyses tools have been used in the thesis- TOPSIS and PROMOTHEE. It allows to find the most optimal district heating system scenario. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the environmental, social and economical aspects of the low temperature district heating system system, as well as suggestions are outlined for more successful implementation of the system. The thesis is written in English. It consists of 111 pages and it includes 16 tables and 74 figures. To compose this work, there are 80 literature sources used, including 65 in foreign languages.
