One of the most commonly used sludge treatment methods is sludge digestion. In some treatment plants, due to increased sludge volumes, the loading of digesters becomes limiting, therefore the required sludge digestion degree is not achieved. This leads to a deterioration in the quality of sludge water during dewatering of digested sludge, and at the same time the amount of pollutants entering the wastewater treatment process increases. Due to increased pollution, a higher capacity of wastewater treatment plants is required, and more energy resources are consumed. In order to reduce the amount of sludge formed during anaerobic digestion of sludge, improve the quality of biogas and increase the amount of biogas formed, iron oxide-based additives were used in the study - „Fe(OH)3”, „SBG” and „SBG Plus”. The dose of additives used was 0,20 g/g SM/21 days. Mesophilic conditions were maintained during anaerobic digestion, and the selected residence time was 21 days. When comparing the reduction in the amount of BSM and SM, the greatest reduction was achieved using sludge without additives - the efficiency was 40 % and 30 %, respectively. The addition of additives did not increase the reduction in BSM and SM, but it remained at a similar level.During the study, it was determined that the additives „SBG” and „SBG Plus” had the greatest effect on the amount of biogas and methane formation. These additives increased the amount of biogas by 11,8 % and 5,1 %, respectively, and the amount of methane by 12,1 % and 5,9 %, respectively. In addition, the application of the additives „Fe(OH)3”, „SBG” and „SBG Plus” had an impact on the reduction of hydrogen sulfide in biogas - the reduction in relation to the control variant reached 12 %, 27 % and 58 %, respectively. The lowest ammonium nitrogen concentrations were found with the addition of „SBG Plus” and „SBG” at 1808 mg/l and 1836 mg/l, 24,7 % and 23,5 % lower than the control, and the lowest phosphate phosphorus concentrations were found with the addition of „Fe(OH)3” at 124 mg/l, 41,2 % lower than the control.
