This thesis points out the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, people, governments, enterprises, and other participants of the economy, digs deeper into valuations and stock prices of chosen publicly listed companies across three different sectors. The health crisis caused financial difficulties worldwide and this thesis aims to untangle the economic impact on sector-specific valuations of certain companies picked to represent the Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Travel Tourism and Transport (TTT), and Consumer Staples (CS) sectors. Using quantitative methodologies of regression and discounted cash flow analyses, the thesis evaluates the pandemic's impact on the companies’ valuations and their stock prices to see how the financials would have gone using the trends and patters of the historical financial statements for two scenarios, namely the pre-pandemic scenario as if no one knew that the pandemic is coming impacting the financials and margins, and the post-pandemic taking the first two pandemic years into the calculations to see the actual financials, the change in margins and patterns. The chosen sectors saw different impacts. The hypothesis was to either support or reject the prevailing analysis in the market and regression analysis, that technology companies were impacted positively, travel companies had suffered from the pandemic, and consumer staples got relatively low impacts. ICT sector showed immunity and growth, TTT, being highly dependent on physical presence suffered severe difficulties, while CS demonstrated resilience and saw a slight grow. The thesis also talks about the role of government intervening by introducing fiscal policies to mitigate such impacts on economies and outlines the longer-term implications on financial markets. The analysis is important to support the existing literature of the initial impact of 2020 by the pandemic but also filling the gap in multi-year pandemic impact several years after, offers insights for investors and decision makers for future crisis management and investment strategies.
