The aim of this master's thesis was to review application of smart constructions and structures in developed countries. The recommendations of application of smart constructions and structures in Lithuania were provided. This thesis are important in creation of system of modern structures maintenance and management for the existing Lithuanian structures to help reduce maintenance cost and to ensure safety of structures. The thesis consists of three main chapters. First chapter presents an overview of structural collapses and their causes, problems of structural maintenance, condition of structures in Lithuania and in the world. The chapter discusses projects of smart structural health monitoring systems and identifies their benefits. The second chapter discusses purpose of structural health monitoring system and its constituent elements and guidelines of preliminary design. Chapter overviews the possibilities of application of main constituent elements: communication systems and sensors, methods of cracking and corrosion monitoring. The third chapter presents the possible types of control of structures. The active control of structures and four its areas of application was analysed. It also provides an overview of smart materials, their properties and opportunities of application.Total volume of the thesis - 158 pages, in the text used 111 illustrations, 9 tables, 84 bibliographical sources.
