Buildings are linked to a significant untapped energy saving potential, accounting for 40% of European Union's (EU) final energy and 36% of CO2 emissions. While energy performance of buildings directive requires all new buildings from 2021 to be nearly-zero energy buildings (NZEB), stronger policy and regulation measures in EU's building sector in terms of old building renovation are up to come in the nearest future. Energy efficient building envelopes plays the key role to achieve decarbonization of the EU's building stock by 2050. The goal of this study is to develop an innovative dynamic facade system with solar energy storage and to evaluate the energy efficiency of the proposed technology. The experimental stands for laboratory and outdoor testing and the design of the control system of a dynamic facade model have been developed. Comparative tests were caried out in laboratory, in controlled heating and cooling conditions, and outdoors. The dynamic component was used for two reasons: a) reflective inner coating focus solar radiation on the element in heating phase, b) aerogel insulation filling decreases heat loss in the cooling phase. By introducing the subject of research - dynamic solar envelope, increased energy efficiency is reached due to solar tracking and the charge and discharge cycles of phase change material (PCM).Master thesis has been supported by Fundamental and Applied Research project ”Smart building EnVElope with solaR Energy STorage (EVEREST)”, project No. lzp-2019/1-0363, funded by the Latvian Council of Science.Thesis consists of 100 pages, 79 Figures, 11 Tables and 127 references.
