Vilniaus senamiestis - istorinis centras, kurį nuo XVI a. pr. supo gynybinė siena, saugojusi miesto teritoriją. Įtvirtinimų atsiradimas mieste, žymėjo vieną iš Vilniaus gyvavimo etapų - miestas užaugo, susiformavo jo branduolys. Siena tapo miesto griaučiais. Tiriamasis objektas - Vilniaus pilių kompleksas su gynybine siena bei jai priklausančiais kultūros paveldo statiniais. Vilniaus miesto gynybinę sieną sudarė dešimt vartų ir du gynybiniai bokštai, iš kurių šiuo metu išlikę vieninteliai Medininkų (Aušros) vartai.Darbe vykdyta Vilniaus pilių komplekso su miesto gynybine siena bei jos priklausiniais raidos bei kultūrinės vertės analizė. Atlikti istoriniai (archyviniai), aprašomieji ir lyginamieji analizuojamo objekto architektūros ir konstrukcijų tyrimai. Pateikiama Vilniaus miesto gynybinės sienos raidos apžvalga, pabrėžiant svarbą ne tik išsaugoti objektą, bet ir planuoti kitų rūšių tyrimo darbus.Vilniaus miesto gynybinė siena įrašyta į Lietuvos Respublikos nekilnojamųjų kultūros vertybių registrą kaip išlikusių fragmentų kompleksas, apjungtas bendros paminklinės teritorijos.Šiandien, bent dalinai atkurti Vilniaus miesto gynybinės sienos trasą galima, pasinaudojant istoriniais šaltiniais, vykdant gausybę įvairių tyrimų bei analizuojant išlikusių gynybinės sienos fragmentų būklę ir visos sienos svarbą miesto raidoje.
The old city of Vilnius is the historical centre that was surrounded by the defensive wall to protect the city since the XVI century. The foundation of fortifications marked one of the periods in Vilnius. The city had expanded, the centre became the core of the city, and the defensive wall became the frames of the town.The objective of the study is Vilnius Castle complex with the defensive wall and cultural heritage buildings that belong to it. Vilnius defense wall was composed of ten gates and two defensive towers. Nowadays only Aušros (Medininkų) gate has remained.The development and cultural worthiness of Vilnius Castle complex with the defense wall and all its cultural belongings is analyzed in the research. Historical (archive), descriptive and comparative studies of the objects architecture and constructions where made. Vilnius defensive wall development review is shown emphasizing not only the importance to save the object, but plan other type of similar object studies as well.Vilnius defensive wall is included in the Lithuanian register of cultural heritage as remained fragment complex in the whole heritage protection territory. It is possible to restore Vilnius defensive wall at partially according to the historical sources, making variety of different researches, as well as analyzing the remained defensive wall state and importance of its value to the city development.
