Improvement of driving conditions on Lithuanian regional roads

Abstract

This paper studies the Litlnianian roads of regional importance and points out the problems in improving driving conditions. Improvement of driving conditions is related to paving of gravel roads, which prevail on regional roads, and to reduction of gravel road dustiness. For the investigation of gravel road condition the original program package „GRAVEL ROADS" was used. By using this package the research data was summed up and the analysis of research data was carried out. The model for the selection of gravel roads for paving is also presented. This model helps to substantiate the volume of paving of gravel roads, taking into account their condition, intensity of use and environmental pollution. For the gravel road sections not planned to be paved on regional roads the driving conditions are suggested to be improved by reducing their dustiness. To reduce the dust on gravel roads it is recommended to use bitumen emulsion, calcium chloride and calcium lignin sulfonate solution.
