Battery power is an increasingly popular option for the transportation sector and plays an important role in new ships. An often-overlooked issue when it comes to batteries used on board a ship is the quality of their construction and materials used. Lower quality batteries (Lead-acid) may at first seem to be more suitable for projects due to their initial lower cost, however these batteries generally have a relatively low lifespan and may exhibit significant defects during use. There are also safety issues related to the use of lower quality marine batteries. Additionally, in many cases a wrong choice of a battery can result a need to be replaced after just a couple of years of use. Therefore, safe integration of batteries requires a selection of an appropriate battery type that meets the requirements of safety and sufficient power for the ship systems. At present, we can meet such needs with lithium-ion batteries, which are considered as the most suitable for on-board applications, regardless of price, due to their high efficiency, service life and high power. These batteries can be used as backu p power to support the operation of the ship essential systems (steering gear, navigational equipment and lights, water pumps), which ensure ship safety, security, and control. Also, they can allow a ship to run in the zero-emission mode, with batteries temporarily acting as the main source of power, or integrated into the ship propulsion system, when batteries are used to improve the engine efficiency without overloading the generator. This limits greenhouse gas emissions (NOX, SOX, CO2, CO, etc.), allowing a ship to comply with strict port requirements and travel in environmentally controlled areas (ECAs).
