Abstract (en)

Transport is essestial for functioning of modern societies. Increases in transport infrastructure and car ownership form a circle of demand: more infrastructure leads to greater car ownership, in turn fuelling demands for more infrastructure. But transport also contributes air pollution, noise, land take and the fragmentation and disruption of natural habitats. It is a major consumer of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources. Transport accidents kill more than 100 000 people every year in Europe. In implementation the principal tasks of sustainable transport development Lithuania follows the requirements of ES directives, conventions and other legal acts. Taking into account the principles of sustainable development, organizational, institutional, legal and technical measures were taken to modernize the transport sector and reduce its environmental impact the independence of Lithuania was re-established.
