Contamination of soil by heavy metals can cause a serious risk and danger to ecosystems and people. To achieve efficient results to avoid the danger for soil quality it must be analysed. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to analyse concentrations of heavy metals in 40 playgrounds of kindergartens in Vilnius city. Concentrations of heavy metals and their spatial distribution in kindergartens playground soils are analysed in this article. Results of the analysis are overviewed and compared with concentrations of heavy metals in relevant legal documents in Lithuania (background and maximum permissible concentrations). The data analysis revealed that play grounds of kindergartens soils in the oldest parts of Vilnius are contaminated by heavy metals (especially Pb, Zn, Cu). 30 % out of 40 analysed soils were polluted by heavy metals to a degree which exceed maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of legal documents in Lithuania. The highest Pb amount established in kindergartens soils was 210.51±6.55 mg/kg; this value was about 2.11 times higher than the MPC. The highest Zn amount was 512.39±19.18 mg/kg; this value was about 1.71 times higher than the MPC. The highest Cu amount established in kindergartens soils was 95.61±2.91 mg/kg; this value did not exceed the MPC. Total pollution index Zd also showed similar results: 20 % out of 40 analyzed soils were moderately polluted, and 2.5 % out of 40 dangerously polluted by heavy metals. Due to the fact that children are often in contact with surface soil, further investigation, and quality control in playgrounds of kindergartens are required.
