The main characteristic of asphalt concrete is its resistance to a variety of stresses. The modulus of elasticity of asphalt concrete is the key feature determining the above resistance. The paper sets out to examine different stresses in layers of asphalt concrete and stress-caused strains in layers of the pavement structure and asphalt concrete. Asphalt concrete is dealt with as a viscoelastic material; its reological model is also described. The paper defines the role of the modulus of elasticity in the formation of various strains and the reological model of asphalt concrete. The modulus of elasticity of asphalt concrete is a characteristic, which heavily depends on a variety of factors. The paper offers an analysis of factors influencing the modulus of elasticity of asphalt concrete during its design and production as well as in the time of its operation. Measures leading to the increase of the modulus of elasticity are also described.
