Nitrogen and phosphorus removal is necessary to avoid eutrophication of water bodies, when treated waste water is outlet to slowly flowed water bodies and recycling as technological water. Biological nitrogen removal from the wastewater is based on the nitrification and denitrification processes at the biological treatment plant with the activated sludge. Different technological schemes, following the source of carbon oxidation during denitrification processes, can be used for the above mentioned processes. “BioBalance” technology as the newest way of nitrogen and phosphorus removal has been applied at Utena Waste Water Treatment Plant. Denitrification rate has been evaluated and compared using “BioBalance” and common technologies of biological nitrogen removal during this scientific work. Denitrification rate dependency on the temperature of the sludge mixture has been determinate.
