The length of Lithuanian railways is 1997.2 km. More than 800 km whereof belong to European corridors, where the speed of passenger trains must be 160 km/h and the amount of freight trains and passengers should increase by 5 % every year [1]. Therefore infrastructure quality control in railways is evaluated by carrying out supervision, which assures railway safety. Although railways are one of the most safe transportation systems, it is impossible to reach absolute security in any of the transportation systems, including railways. Since technical railway infrastructure condition is unsatisfactory in Lithuania, it is accountable for about 70 % of all accidents and breakdowns [2]. The purpose of the article is to estimate how technical railway infrastructure condition should be controlled in order to assure the railway safety. For that purpose analysis of technical condition of Lithuanian railways, control of technical condition and its influence on railway safety are presented.
