Next-generation supply chains through a lens of general systems theory and complexity theory: A bibliometric analysis

Even though sustainable and digital supply chains are getting more attention, scholars do not widely use the term “next-generation supply chain” (NGSC), which was created at the end of the first millennium, and includes both sustainable and digitised supply chains. General Systems Theory (GST) is still one of the leading modern theories across the disciplines, and it is used to analyse NGSC as a system. However, like all other theories, it faces limitations that can be solved by combining it with Complexity theory (CT). Therefore, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications related to NGSC, GST, and CT within the Web of Science (WOS) database is provided. Bibliometrix and CitNetExplorer software are utilised to create visual information. This article has limitations, including only one database and focusing solely on bibliometric analysis. Future works may research and deliver results on systematic literature reviews on synthesising NGSC and other least common business and management theories.
