Abstract

In the article the spatial and functional features of Vilnius urban architectural heritage for two periods are reviewed: city evolution during Soviet period (1964-1990), the present stage of the city evolution (1991-1995). As a main source of information, general plans of Vilnius city were used. The work provides an analysis of Vilnius development by the comparison of such aspects of 1964, 1980 and 1995 general plans: functional zoning: the geographical distribution and development of residential, industrial territories and public utility companies, the network of the main streets in the city and its development. The expansion of Vilnius main streets network and functional structures at first is analysed using the zoning of the city in concentric circles (concentric model), later these circles are divided into the segments (concentric-segmented model). The conclusions of the work are based on the regression analysis of concentric and concentric-segmented models and comparison of the above-mentioned general plans of Vilnius city.
