The performance of biological wastewater treatment systems depends on the performance of a primary treatment unit to a large degree. Treating small quantities of domestic wastewater from one or several households, primary treatment is usually accomplished by a septic tank. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the removal of suspended solids (SS) and 7-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD7) in a three chamber septic tank. It was found out that the performance of a septic tank depended on wastewater retention time in a septic tank: when retention time was three days, SS and BOD7 removal efficiencies was 66-87% and 46-76% respectively, while retention time being one day, SS removal efficiency decreased to 56-75% and BOD7 to 15-58%. Finally, the concentrations of SS and BOD7 in the effluent of the septic tank became higher than in the influent to the septic tank and the septic tank was desludged.
