Abstract

The meanings of new urban rituals and emotions are collectively shared by citizens and become a point of attraction for locals and travellers. Forming of new rituals by installing interactive art objects and by introducing simple scenarios of alternative use of public spaces could be considered as an efficient way to initiate a public discussion on the urgent topics of deactivated public spaces, demonstrating possible solutions of the problem, which are rooted in the understanding of the interplay between the spatial structures and bodily experience. The idea to arrange “emotionally moving situations” for to activate reflexive attitude of the citizens toward everyday urban settings was proposed by situationists. By disturbing usual everyday rhythms and trajectories, urban art interventions, flash mobs and urban games establish a reflexive distance with the usual, routine “choreography” of the place and propose alternative scenarios of behaviour in public space. Therefore urban art interventions can be considered as a tool for creative reconceptualization of spatial structures and social order, embedded in urban space.
