Contemporary European cities has stable of shrinking population, but area of the cities is constantly growing In last decade a lively discussion of the compactness of the cities and sustainable urban development has been simulated by the European Commission's Green Paper on the Urban Environment, by a number of recent Planning Policy Guidance notes issued by the Department of the Environment in Britain, by general urban policy changes in Australia and by series ol urban design proposals lot new forms ol suburban development in the United Stales This article represents theoretical compact city model types, creation principles of these models and methodology of evaluation the degree of city compactness The thypical example of German cities research is studied and explanations are given. The be ways td achieve higher compactness ol the cities arc discussed and some examples of experiments going on in Europe are mentioned.
