Analysis of problems of communication system in the old town of Vilnius

Abstract

The article deals with the communication problems characteristic of the old town of Vilnius. The analysis of transport traffic dynamics and traffic organisation has revealed that the key problems of communication lie in the overall urban communication system rather than in the capacity of the street network of the old town. They could be solved only by long-term, sustainable and consistent strategy of the overall urban transport traffic of Vilnius. Monitoring of the carried out transport studies has pointed out that the expansion of urban communication system is inevitable and that the street network should be upgraded in the peripheral areas and at the approaches to the old town. The applied methods allow substantiation of the diversion of transport flows to the surrounding trunk streets by bypassing the core zone of the old town. It is foreseen to gradually decrease the number of parking places in the old town by arranging paid parking facilities at the approaches to the core of the old town. The article also deals with the issues of modern public transport services in the areas of the old town. Besides, correlation and regression analysis of the transport attraction of the old town has been carried out.
