Aim of this article is to analyze evolution of freight transportation by Lithuanian railways and to study it dependency upon the formation of transit cargo flows through the Lithuanian territory. The article looks through the Lithuanian nowadays situation of freight transportation by railway transport in local and international sector and the possibilities to develop the railway system with the aim of the integration into the European freight transportation network. The attention is paid to the Lithuanian and transit cargo market and competitiveness of railway transport sector. The development opportunities are based on the perspectives of transportation activities and on the forecasting of freight flows by railway network in Lithuania.
