Abstract (en)

Article describes where Business Process Execution Language for Web services (BPEL4WS) is today, how it developed, and where it is heading. It provides a context for understanding the motivation, industry players and standards organizations behind BPEL4WS. It examines the BPEL4WS heritage in relation to the Web services ecosystem. It also reviews the business integration and business process management landscapes before the appearance of BPEL4WS.
