Abstract

Thanks to favourite geographical location and a well developed transport system, we can hope to increase our transit' transportation between Western Europe and SNG. The most important for Lithuania transport corridor is at present IXb. This corridor crosses the Republic of Lithuania from Minsk to Klaipėda. The railway line from Daugpilis to Klaipėda is also important for Lithuania. This line passes 42% of goods transported through the seaport of Klaipėda. The goods are mainly transported from SNG to Western Europe. This process is drawling. Goods stream is not almost in the opposite direction. It is evident that forwarders and goods senders from Western Europe know insufficiently the Lithuanian transport system. Besides, the Lithuanian transportation sevice is insufficiently effective. The possibilities of the Lithuanian transport system need to be spread in INTERNET and we must seek drawing goods flow from the west to the east through Lithuania. The possibilities of railway ferry - boats are not used. This problem should be solved in the local and international context. With that end in view a department for transit transportation development could be established. Transit transportation is important for the industry of Lithuania, its image and social evolution. Transit transportation development will influence negatively on ecology but there is no alternative.
