Challenges and opportunities for Lithuanian transport sector to become an integrated part of trans-Asian connections

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of opportunities for Lithuanian transport sector to better integrate in the trans-European transport network and to become an important part of Trans-Asian connections. Increasing traffic intensity unavoidably requires faster development and modernisation of transport infrastructure, which means larger investment. In developing a modern transport system meeting the EU standards and criteria, the key priority is the development, rehabilitation and modernisation of those transport infrastructure objects that form an integral part of TEN-T. Furthermore, the Lithuanian transport network is an important component of the Baltic Sea Region's transport system, which is rapidly developing and aims to become an important link in the formation and development of the Euro-Asian transport flows and meet the arising challenges. Another not less significant task is to improve road, railway, water and multimodal transport infrastructure of national and regional signification in order to better meet the growing mobility needs of the society, promote development of business and tourism, and increase competitiveness of the economy.
