Fish behavior is a good tool for assessing water pollution and could be used as one of the parameters to evaluate water toxicity of natural ecosystems. The purpose of the present study is to determine the water toxicity level of the permanently polluted hydroecosystem (of the Kairiai landfill region) in six sampling sites by use of juvenile rainbow trout's (Oncorhynchus mykiss) rapid behavioral responses. In order to evaluate the toxicity of water studied, the data obtained was compared with the results of the tests with standard (reference) priority heavy metal (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cd, Mn) model mixture. It was found out that the most sensitive behavioral response of the trout is reverse breathing (coughing) rate. Comparison with the toxicity of the reference mixture of heavy metals showed that at the nearest to landfill sampling site the heavy metal concentration safe for the fish has been exceeded even 86 times. The multiple linear regression analysis performed showed that the tested water toxicity for juvenile trout depends on heavy metal concentration in the water and the distance from the pollution source.
