Abstract

The embankment of river Neris in Vilnius brings associations to the mental legacy of Le Corbusier, the famous Swiss / French modern architect and urban theorist whose ideas are responsible for damage done to European cities during the last century. The present embankment is just a formal structure that envelopes the river but provides almost no aesthetic pleasures along the waterside. Before this dramatic change, we had a rich history of water transportation; at the beginning of last century, Neris was for instance a place of attraction where steamboats carried numerous passengers throughout the season. Do we have reason, willpower and imagination enough to restore at least a part of the embankment's glory, asks the author.
