The requirements of the Hygiene Norm HN24: 2003 for the quality of drinking - water in Lithuania came into force in 2003. The quality of raw - water in Kirtimai watering place junctions does not meet the requirements of this Norm due to high concentrations of iron and manganese. Experiments were carried out over 2004.01-2004.03 with the aim to evaluate the growing of iron bacterias biomass and to remove Fe and Mn from groundwater using microbiological units. Underground water was aerated and filtered through the experimental non-reagent sand filters at a rate of 15 m/h. The results of the investigation show that concentration of Fe. Mn and quantity of iron bacteria subject to filters depth is abaiting. The biomass of iron bacteria was highest at a filter bed dept 5 mm, when oxidation was active. There was no iron in filtered water and the concentration of Mn in 1500 mm filter bed depth corresponded to the requirements of Hygiene Norm HN24: 2003.
