As the volume of container handling in ports increases, it is natural to optimize the organization of container handling in the selected port terminal. This is a pilot study that uses empirical research methods such as chronometric observation and time and motion study. It was found that the following operations of container loading process had the longest duration: the transportation of the container by vehicle to the pier and return of the vehicle to the storage area. These two operations could be better organized by distributing and controlling the vehicle flows and servicing them not only by the container terminal crane, but also by the mobile container handler. This would speed up these operations. When unloading containers from the ship, it takes the longest time to lift the container from the ship and stow it on the vehicle. The assignment of two workers on board to monitor the actions of the ship's crew in unlashing containers would reduce the time of this process. The process of unlashing containers on board can be optimized depending on the situation by organizing appropriate cooperation between terminal employees and the ship's crew.
