Development of motorization is accompanied by problems connected with the threat to road traffic safety. The safeguarding of road traffic safety is one of the most important problems in motor transport. In the world 400-500 thousand people are killed and almost 15-20 million are injured every year. Traffic intensity, which has grown to a considerable extent, causes many difficulties in ensuring safe traffic. In 1995 the number of road vehicles exceeded 1 million. In 1980-1997 13592 people were killed and 89335 people were injured in road traffic accidents in Lithuania. Only in 1997 754 people were killed and 6199 people were injured. Every year the Lithuanian economy suffers great losses - about 690 million Litas. Although the level of motorization in Lithuania is lower than in many developed European countries, our indicators of road traffic accidents are among the worst if compared with other European countries. The main reasons of such a high level of increase in road traffic accidents in Lithuania were determined. To improve road traffic safety in Lithuania, the State Road Traffic Safety Program of the Republic of Lithuania was prepared for 1997-2000. The main trends for improving road traffic safety were suggested.
