The biological phosphorus removal was studied in a lab-scale activated sludge plant consisting of the first anacrobic step and the second aerobic step (the A/0 process). Synthetic wastewater contained acetate and milk powder as an organic substrate. The experiments were carried out at different values of the activated sludge load using different BOD5/Ptotal ratio in the influent and a. mixed liquor hydraulic retention time in the anaerobic reactor. The phosphate removal versus the activated sludge load fitted a logarithmic curve. The phosphate removal at a low activated sludge load decreased mainly because of a high nitrate concentration in the return activated sludge. The experimental observations indicate that the magnitude of the biological excess phosphate uptake is linked strongly to the magnitude of the phosfhate release in the anaerobic reactor.
