Abstract

Building materials contain amounts of natural radionuclides. Artificial radionuclides may also be present in building materials. Their sources are fallout from nuclear tests and Chernobyl accident. By-products or wastes from industrial processes used in building materials may cause enhanced concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides. In controlling thenatural radiation, it is necessary to determine the levels of natural radioactivity. Radionuclides in building materials are sources of external and internal exposure. Concentrations of radionuclides in Lithuanian and imported building materials were examined. Concentrations of radionuclides were measured by HpGe gamma spectrometers. Activity index was used for evaluation of suitability of building materials from the point of view of radiation protection.
