The article describes the following issues: appearance of insurance companies in Lithuania; foundation of first Lithuanian insurance institutions and their functions; introduction of licences for insurance activities and the procedure of issuing them; necessity of obligatory state insurance and its introduction in Lithuania; the Law of obligatory state insurance of structures against fire; performance of supervision and control functions concerning insurance institutions, privileges applied to insurance institutions; territorial distribution of insurance institutions in Lithuania. Establishment, activities and functions of the joint-stock company “Lietuva”, “Lietuvos Loidas” and of the central insurance union “Kooperacija” are analysed in the article. Periods of the development, depression, revival and upsurge of insurance operations of Lithuanian insurance institutions and establishment of a state insurance institution in 1940 are also described.
