Until recently, at Nida, Juodkrante and Preila-Pervalka Waterworks aerated groundwater has been treated in iron removal filters with quartz sand filter media. The existing groundwater treatment equipment cannot ensure drinking quality of water. The permanganate index characterized by the concentration of organic substances in groundwater (at Nida and Preila-Pervalka Waterworks) was found to be up to the Hygiene Norm requirements and was without sufficient losses after the removal of iron. Iron, ammonium and manganese concentration in treated water was up to the Hygiene Norm requirements either. The removal of organic matter needed the use of equipment to result in a lesser concentration at Nida and Preila-Pervalka Waterworks before the iron removal treatment. Data of the possibilities for the removal of organic substances, iron, ammonium and magnesium from groundwater can be obtained by using chemicals with natural powdered zeolite (NPZ adsorbent) and filtration via quartz sand filter media. Experimental investigations are presented in this paper.
