Various regulated harmful substances (CO, CH, NOx, S02 and solid particles) of emissions into the atmosphere from Diesel locomotives and trains are presented in the introduction of this paper. A method for calculating poisonous emissions, based on research results, is presented. The air pollution estimation is based on the amount of directly consumed fuel. Division of the haul-age rolling-stock into series and distribution of engine operating time into five loading regimes improves the reliability of this calculation. The presented method estimates the locomotive engine loading degree, the life of haulage fleet, the rolling-stock design and the quality of the fuel used. Technical and exploitational means of reducing harmful emissions from Diesel engines are specified, such as the weight of a train, the traffic monitoring ways, qualification of an engine driver, loading regimes and quality of rolling-stock maintenance. The technical and engine design means devoted to control poisonous emissions from Diesel engines are catalyc converters, exhaust gas, recirculation systems solid particle liquid filters, etc. The presented estimation technique must be improved according to changes in exploitation conditions and the haulage rolling-stock design.
