In 1996, Digital Elevation Model of Lithuania DEM50 was created. Points, obtained from topographical maps M 1:50000, were used for it. Contour lines and elevation points were digitised. In 1999, DEM50 was reviewed and updated the make it more precise. The additional elevation points, obtained from digitised hydrographic objects, were added. Both versions of DEM50 were compared with test Digital Terrain Model (DTM), which contains 64467 gridded elevation points (obtained from topographical maps M 1:10000). Also, DEM50 was investigated in Vilnius city area. For this test the DTM prepared by enterprise "Vilniaus planas" was used. DEM50, prepared in 1996, has the systematic error of 0,8 m. This error was eliminated in the new DEM50 of 1999. In general, the DEM50 satisfies the requirement of 5 m for such scale models. Some deflection areas were detected mainly in the valleys of the biggest rivers. The suggestions for the improvement of the accuracy of the DEMs are presented.
