The following article looks into the concentration of heavy metals in the filtrate in Kaunas Lapiu landfill as well as the amount of metals reaching underground water. There are two waste collecting fields in the landfill. One of them (the first) is set in a natural ravine, while another (the third) has an artificial bottom covered with non-permeable substances. Heavy metal concentrations were determined for different waste collecting fields by examining filtrate samples taken from respective fields. Samples taken from boreholes adjacent to the waste collecting fields underwent chemical analysis to determine the concentrations of heavy metals (copper, lead, nickel, chrome, iron and manganese) and the pollution of underground water with said contaminants. The study showed that waste collecting field I is is more polluted and therefore pollutes the environment more than field III.
