Heavy metals such lead, zinc, chromium, magnesium are toxic priority pollutants that commonly interfere with the beneficial use of industrial applications. They are also common groundwater contaminants at industrial and military installations. Numerous processes exist for removing dissolved heavy metals, including ion exchange, precipitation, phytoextraction, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis. Nevertheless, many of these approaches can be marginally cost-effective or difficult to implement. Therefore, the need exsist for a treatment strategy that is simple, robust, and hat addresses local resources and constrains. In this regard, naturally occuring zeolites hold great potential for use to remove heavy metals from contaminanted groundwater.
