Abstract

Radon is an odorless, colorless radioactive gas which is formed by the breakdown of uranium. Radon can be found in high concentration in soils and rocks containing granite, shale, phosphate and uranium and in some cases in industrial waste material. When radon breaks down into decay by-products, particles are circulated through the air. When you breathe, these particles enter your lungs and emit radiation which can damage lung tissue. Prolonged exposure to high rates of Radon can increase the risk of acquiring lung cancer. Radon can penetrate into your basement through cracks in the basement flooring, cracks or pores in concrete walls, through dirt floors, floor drains and piping. It can also seep into private wells and enter the home anytime the water spigot is turned on.
