The article presents the development of high strength low alloy steels. Particular attention is paid to grain refinement coupled with precipitation strengthening. Structure-property relationships have been investigated is steels where microalloying additions (vanadium and niobium) are used for grain refinement and dispersion strengthening. The effect of isothermal aneeling and coolling on mechanical properties was investigated. Special attention is given to weldability characteristics and response to heat treatment. In low and high energy welding, heat-affected zone and weld metal toughness are extremely important. To develop weld microstructures that give best properties, base-metal composition, consumables and welding parameters must be carefully considered.
