The main part of industrial pollutants is composed of volatile compounds of organic nature: phenols, alcohols, aldehydes, esters etc. Harmfulness of these chemical substances is determined mostly by their chemical nature and overrun of the Maximal Permitted Concentration in ambient air of residential and working environment. Therefore, when removing volatile compounds of organic nature from air. it is very important to choose and apply at the given industrial object the proper, efficient, affordable air-purification method. These requirements are met by unsophisticated, commonly used technologies of biological air purification. With this aim in mind the activated pine bark medium based biological filter was developed at the Environmental Department of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University'. This type of the biological activated pine-bark charge, as one of the basic biological air cleaning characteristics, was chosen because of its long operating time, sorption qualities, structure, low costs. When removing volatile organic compounds from air, there may be cultivated in the charge of biological equipment both specific and natural microorganism cultures. It is rather expensive to use some specific microorganism cultures in biological air-purification equipment. Therefore, we have chosen to cultivate natural microorganism associations in the activated pine-bark charge of the biofilter developed by us. Purpose of this work to evaluate capability of the activated pine-bark charge to sorp selected volatile organic compounds before air purification and at various time moments of operation, and at that same to evaluate.
