The focus of metamaterials and functional material development strategies is on the structures of the matter itself, which has resulted in the ubiquitous manipulation of light—and, more broadly, electromagnetic waves—to produce unusual and distinctive electromagnetic properties. The exact size, geometry, shape, orientation, and arrangement of the nanostructures in metamaterials are all known. These arrangements are influencing electromagnetic light waves to produce new characteristics that are hard or impossible to produce using natural materials. In order to provide a strong foundation for future research on this fascinating and quickly developing subject, this review goes into great detail about these metamaterials from the viewpoints of the effective medium theory.
