The collection and treatment of wastewater and the efficient use of sewage sludge biochar are critical to a growing population and the need of phosphorus also increasing. Using sewage sludge biochar as an adsorbent and biofilter for wastewater treatment from phosphates will create an opportunity to reuse wastewater sewage sludge (SS) and retrieve phosphorus back into cycle. The aim of the study is to investigate the application of sewage sludge biochar to the removal of phosphate from wastewater and the parameters influencing its efficiency. By using circular economy principles, the idea is to use waste that generates from wastewater treatment to use it for further wastewater treatment from non-organic pollutant like phosphates. This will lead to less amounts of sewage sludge waste and effective wastewater treatment. After evaluation of experimental results using a batch adsorption experiment, the best removal efficiency was recorded using 600 °C sewage sludge biochar (17,5 mg/l at 50 mg/l and 18,36 mg/l at 100 mg/l P concentration). Using phosphate adsorption during the fixed bed column process, the highest level of phosphate removal efficiency was after filtration 30 min of filtration process (400 °C - 44 %, 500 °C - 71 %, 600 °C - 90 %), this concludes that the highest removal efficiency showed sewage sludge biochar of 600 °C. Sewage sludge biochar as a filler for adsorption of phosphates using fixed-bed column method can reach better efficiency results then using batch experiment method while directly mixing sewage sludge biochar with solution. In this case, the best results were reached during the fixed-bed method using 600 °C sewage sludge biochar at the first 2 hours when efficiency was above 84 %.Based on combined results, conclusions and recommendations are submitted.
